Hollow Screw Dryer Applications & Typical Use Cases

Used hollow screw dryers are well-suited for continuous drying of difficult or high-moisture materials. Typical applications include:

  • Drying wastewater sludge and biosolids

  • Processing chemical pastes, slurries, and filter cakes

  • Removing moisture from food byproducts and agricultural materials

  • Handling sticky or cohesive materials that require agitation during drying

  • Supporting thermal treatment of industrial byproducts and residuals

When to Choose a Hollow Screw Dryer

Hollow screw dryers are ideal for operations requiring indirect drying with efficient heat transfer and material movement in a single unit. They are often selected for materials that are difficult to fluidize or prone to clumping. Facilities working with viscous, sticky, or high-moisture content materials benefit from the self-cleaning action and continuous conveying provided by the screw design.

Used Hollow Screw Dryer Buying Considerations

When evaluating a used hollow screw dryer, consider the following:

  • Screw Diameter & Length: Determines capacity and residence time

  • Heating Medium: Steam, thermal oil, or other heat sources

  • Throughput & Moisture Reduction: Match drying performance to process requirements

  • Material Handling Characteristics: Suitability for sticky, abrasive, or fibrous materials

  • Sealing & Containment: Important for odor control or hazardous materials

  • Condition & Heat Transfer Surfaces: Inspect screw flights, shafts, and internal passages

Why Buy Used Hollow Screw Dryers

Used hollow screw dryers can be a strong fit for facilities looking to add drying capacity without committing to long equipment build cycles. Their compact footprint and integrated conveying design make them adaptable to existing plant layouts. For operations dealing with challenging materials, these systems provide a reliable approach to continuous drying and material handling.

Sell Your Used Hollow Screw Dryers

Facilities retiring sludge handling systems or upgrading drying technology can reposition hollow screw dryers through Aaron Equipment’s resale network. We review equipment details and align available units with buyers running similar material profiles and processing conditions.

A hollow screw dryer is an indirect drying system that uses heated, hollow screw flights to transfer heat to material while conveying it through the unit. It is commonly used for drying bulk solids, sludges, and pastes.

They are used to dry materials such as sludge, chemical pastes, food byproducts, and industrial residues. These dryers are particularly effective for materials that are sticky, high in moisture, or difficult to handle.

Hollow screw dryers combine drying and conveying in one system using indirect heat, whereas many other dryers rely on direct heat or separate material handling equipment. This makes them well-suited for contained and energy-efficient drying.

Pricing reflects factors such as screw size, heating configuration, throughput capacity, and overall condition. Units designed for higher volumes or specialized materials typically fall at higher price levels.

Yes. Aaron Equipment sources hollow screw dryers from facilities phasing out equipment or modifying process lines, helping place these systems into operations that require continuous indirect drying.
