The basic function of a Spray Dryer is to change a liquid into a powder form by the use of hot air. This process involves basic components including: feed pumps, atomizers or spray nozzles, air heaters, air dispersers, drying chambers, powder recovery systems, and process control systems.
The spray drying process consists of three distinct stages. The first stage is “atomization” where a nozzle or rotary atomizer removes small droplets of liquid from the original form. Next is the “drying process” where the droplets are dried into a powder form by the use of hot air. By adjusting the temperature of the hot air, the final product can be modified were as particle size and viscosity can be controlled. The final “recovery process” is to remove the powder form through the exhaust gas by either a bag filter or cyclone.
Spray Drying has many benefits including effectively reducing the bulk weight of many products. This makes packaging a powder product simpler than a liquid product and reduces shipping costs due to less weight.
