Tips for Selling Idle Machinery

December 03, 2014

If you have idle machinery sitting around or have recently upgraded your equipment and you are looking to sell your old equipment, there are some steps you can take to ensure that it happens quickly without any hold ups. Below are some tips you can follow when selling your machinery.

Unload when the getting is good – You might be tempted to keep unused machinery lying around, just in case you need a backup or spare part in the future. Unfortunately, equipment that sits idle for too long can lose its functionality over time if upkeep is not invested in, thereby decreasing its resale value. Further lowering your chances of receiving top dollar is machinery that is incomplete and missing vital parts that you took from it. Over the long haul, it is much more cost-effective to buy a spare part when and if you need it than to lower the resale value of your old equipment by taking key elements from it.

Say cheese – In order to present your machinery in the best light and attract interested buyers, make sure you take plenty of pictures of it from all different angles. If you’re partnering with a professional equipment seller, they may handle this aspect for you. Either way, you will want to get the partnership off on the right foot with images as well as a detailed description of the machinery you are looking to sell.

Roll up your sleeves and use a little elbow grease – There is no way around it. Buyers will judge your equipment by its cover. Whatever you can do to make your machinery look more attractive to prospective purchasers will give you a leg up. You only have one chance to make a first impression, so make it count.

Get the message out there – The fastest way to recoup on your investment is to advertise that you have idle equipment for sale. Working with a dealer that buys and sells used equipment everyday may do the work for you. They most likely have a website where they can list your equipment and market it to a specific audience on a large scale. This targeted approach works much better than listing your equipment in the classified section of your local paper.
